The Open 2018 season begins

New Year, New Season. A little over a month of starting the 2018 Open, this season comes with many novelties and surely some surprise. Let's go step by step.

Open 2018

They will start on February 22 and last 5 weeks. Nothing new for the moment, the dates of every year are fulfilled. But Dave Castro (director of the CrossFit Games), who likes to play has already given the first clue on his Instagram account: there will be dumbbells in the Open. I think that after introducing them in the Open last year and that there was no bar in Regionals, it is no surprise but can mark the training of many co -libidores.

As every year there will be HSPU, Double Unders, Remo, Domidadas/C2B, Muscle Ups, Cleans, Snatch, Thruster or Burpees. Come on, if a burpess and Thrusters wod fall again, I shouldn't catch you by surprise. The same as a wod with muscleups or with chest to bar. Yes there is an important novelty this year in the Open, and that is that the teams go from 6 people to 4 (as in the invitational). This will make good teams even better (if you eliminate the weakest 2 members, the logical thing is to be a more competitive team), it will make us see new teams (more boxes will be encouraged to compete as a team) and probably some athletes will jump from individual to Teams to aspire to get to Madison. If we add that in Europe there are more squares to go to Games, let's probably see many surprises between athletes.

Regionals

The most important novelty this year is the new distribution of regions. On the one hand, the Latin American region is created again, where a place will be distributed to each category to go to Games. On the other, the California region joins the West region (west of USA and Canada) creating a larger region. And finally, Europe is divided into two regions. Meridian Region (4 places to Games), which will include Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland and Portugal, together with Africa and the Middle East; and Europe region (5 places to Games), with the rest of European countries and Russia.

This is a priori is good news for European athletes since there will be 4 more places for the same region last year, It can be a disappointment for the show that we saw other years. For example, in Meridian we will see 6 men's top 10 athletes, but we will see 2 of the 10 best women last year. And in Europe the opposite will happen. AND Another doubt arises Two regional ones attract more brands from abroad or on the contrary, stands will be lost? We will have to wait for the year and open to advance to better define each of the regions.

Rumors

Madrid is confirmed as the third year of Regional Meridian. It was something that was known, since there was talk that it had been signed for 3 years as headquarters. If so, next year we will see headquarters. On the other hand, it has not yet been announced but it seems that Berlin will be the headquarters of the new European region.
